The test you need to take is called the DLAB - Defense Language Aptitude Battery. You need to make at least an 85 to even get into the Defense Language Institute, and even higher - 100 - to be considered to learn a difficult language like Japanese. The Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA has a website, but I can't remember the address right off-hand. Put in a search for it at Yahoo, and I'm sure you'll come up with it. I took the test in February of this year and made a 119, but I'm now being recruited as an officer instead. Good luck.

I just separated from 5 years of active service as a chinese linguist. It's the best job to do in the navy, period.**Don't waste your time being an officer-it's a joke and you won't get much respect from enlisted folks.**But unfortunately, when I went through DLI Japanese was only reserved for officers.**But they have many exciting languages.**If you learn Chinese, you will go to Hawaii (where I am), Guam, England, Maryland, or possibly Denver.**You'll have a quick tour in Texas too. They also sent me to China for a month back in 96 for free plus $1200 to spend!! I have ever served time on a ship, but I was asked.**It's the best job, if you can put up with odd hours.**Feel free to contact me privately to email back and forth about more job opportunities as a linguist.
