Hi Kristy, There is an article in the Navy Magazine "All Hands" about OS's it is in the July 98 issue. The address is:
www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpub/allhands/ah-top/html
I hope this helps you out. As far as where you will go after your school is up to you and the detailer. When you are in boot camp you will fill out a "Dream Sheet" this tells the detailers where you want to be stationed. Give this some thought before it comes time to fill it out. Talk to people like the recruiters ask them about the bases and what they liked about them and most important what they didn't.
If you have any more questions I would be happy to help you in any way I can. Just E-Mail me...Good Luck...Terri

Hi, my name is Crystal and I have been in the Navy for 2 years and an os for 2 years. I was stationed on board the USS Fife for 1 year and 7 months before I transferred to shore duty for personal reasons. Being an Os in port is nice. There isn't much to do and I'd usually only work from 0715-1100. Work consisted of just straighting up combat and reading a book. But, underway you work 12-16 hours a day standing watch. If you are running drills or different conditions of readiness you are required to somtimes be up for days. You don't get any time to yourself. If you are not on watch you are trying to sleep, eat, or take a shower. A typical day underway is to stand a 6 hour watch, get 6 hours off, stand another 6 hour watch, get 6 hours off. You just keep repeating that cycle until you pull into port. You will get tired and grouchy. But the plus side is maximum liberty in port and no dirty work. You judt work in an air conditioned room watching the radars and tracking other ships. It's not a bad job to have. But be prepared for jealousy from other peple on the ship who have to work harder and longer to you. They will resent you. Good luck!

73-77 I was stationed in Norfolk Virginia. I was an OS, made 2nd class. I worked at anti sub warfare school there. Went to Great Lakes A school for the training. Also, I was stationed in Iceland for 4 months. We were fairly rare in the Navy. Sounds like ship duty which would give you the opportunty to learn your trade more quickly. Good luck to you.
