No one in his or her right mind would like to be in
combat, that is not the question. Men are no more pre-
disposed to horrific things than women. Combat is not
a right it is a responsibility. Women should not be
allowed to avoid their responsibility any more than
men. If some gal can muster the get-up and go to
handle a M16 or whatever, who am I or anyone to deny
her ability.
This whole question actually centers around who
gets the benies, infantry officers and NCOs are usually
chosen before any other military specialty for pro-
motions and commands. If women are denied these occu-
pations then they are denied a piece of the power
structure. And those in power have always looked for
excuses to deny others entrance into the power base.
Combat is ugly alright, but no more so than the
emergency operating rooms in combat zones where women
help to save combat lives.
And, the fellow who cited women in squads not doing
their fair share, was absolutely correct. Because some
guy was in charge and allowed her to slack off. I've
seen it happen all the time. When leaders demand of
women the work and scarifices they do of men, they'll
get it. When I was in charge everyone worked, busted-
up, hung-over, pregnant, you name it. If they had the
pickle suit on it meant they were there to provide
their skills for the benefit of the unit. Sleeping and
slacking off was not one of them. Women surely have
not got the corner on goofing off, men were doing that
long before women came along in the military.
A Vietnam Veteran, Marine and combat wounded, once
stated during an argument on this subject that he pre-
ferred my company in a foxhole as opposed to just any
man. He wanted someone who could hit what they aimed
at, he reasoned, knowing that I was an excellent shot.
In combat the bottom line is the bottom line, or
it should be.
