Dear Deana:

One of my prior military position was screening physical exams for those wishing to be pilots (or any type of aircrew member).

First, you cannot be older than 25 at the time of appointment as a pilot or 24 for a navigator.

Second, the physical requires much more than the average physical in the areas of vision, blood pressure, height & weight, blood test, etc. Also, you must have depth perception.

To be a Fighter pilot, you have to pass the physical portions such as hyperbaric chambers, altitude/pressure chamber, gravitational test, etc. those that do not, but are still able to fly can volunteer to fly things like cargo planes and bombers. Only the best are chosen for fighters.

If you have any Air Force medical friends, they can look up the specifics in Air Force Instruction 48-123 for you. Also, any local AFROTC unit can do the same.

In other areas, you will have to attend Officer Basic Training, Undergraduate Pilot Training and if selected to fly fighters, Combat Flight Training.

Some good web sites to help you would be www.af.mil. Look under Recruiting, Aviation, and Laughlin AFB,TX (where fighter pilots train initially), Nellis AFB, NV and Little Rock AFB, AR.

Good luck.
