I was discharged from the Army on a Chpt. 11 discharge this past May. I can**rejoin the army after 2 yrs seperation. I was not discharged under bad conditions. I had family problems back home. Now, everything is straight at home and I am ready to go back but I would like to join the Air Force instead of the Army. Does anyone out there know if I still have to wait 2 yrs to join a different branch or can I go back sooner? I had very high test scores and went into the Army as an E-2.**I would appreciate any info on the Air Force. Thanks

Dear Jennifer:

It is very admirable for you to want to join the AF. however, it is NOT going to be easy. I served 6 years in the Army and was discharged during the 1992 drawdown when a lot of military jobs were being replaced by civilian employees. I went into the Army NG for a few months then switched to the AF Reserve. For years, I have been trying to go ADAF an I possess 3 AFSCs that the AF needs badly. Each time, I am denied because I was prior Army and not prior AF. Finally, (after speaking with the right people I suppose) I was told to apply under Exception to Policy, but there is still no guarantee for me.

Basically, since you ARE considered prior service from another branch, even though you may have only served a short time, it it going to be hard.

My advice to you is: 1. Go to an AF recruiter that will be truly willing to help you. (The process will require a lot of paperwork because of waivers, conversions, etc.) and some recruiters just are not willing to take the time to do it. 2. If you know any Air Force, Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard commanders or senior NCOs; get Letters of Recommendation from them for your packet. Even if you are told it is not needed, get them anyway. 3. You may want to consider Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard. They have full time openings as well and sometimes are easier to enlist into than the active duty counterparts. 4. Don't give up!! The military is a versatile environment and policies change from time to time. Hang in there and don't quit. 5. For direct information, you can call USAF Recruiting Headquarters at Randolph AFB, TX. The chief recruiter is Senior Master Sergeant Toby. The number is (210) 652-3594/6664. (But I would only call if you are not successful with a local recruiter.)

Good luck. If you wish, let me know what you find. Maybe I can find something to help me, too.

Sincerely; David L. Barton Valdosta, GA

It really all depends on how long you were in active duty. Also are you married If so, is your hubby military? If you are and if he is and if you have kids, you are ineligable in the Air force. You can join any other branch but not the Air force if you have kids and are married to active duty military. That is the problem I am having now. I wasn't in long enough to get my five level, adnd my hubby is active and we have a kid. I'm trying to get a chief t help me out, if you know anyone "up there" see if they can pull some strings for you. Chiefs can move mountains. (chiefs in the af are e-9's). Good luck to you!!!!! Sonja Rowe
