hey,
I am planning on enlistment into USAF. I qualify for everything, I'm waiting until Jan. '99 when I turn 18. Then I want to do the DEP enlistment until I graduate from High School. I am really concerned about jobs I'm qualified for. Are there many openings overseas for jobs in INTELLIGENCE for airman basics and if so, are you guaranteed that training and job right out of basic training? The reason I ask is I can't get straight answers from the recruiter!!! P.S. Any other advice on your opinion would be helpful..
thanx, Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth! I'm planning on enlisting in the USAF and going in in May(talk about HOT weather down in TX!!) I want to get into intel work also. When I asked my recruiter, he told me that when you go to MEPS to take the ASVAB, get a physical, etc, they will have you list 3 choices of jobs you want to do. I initially thought this meant that I had to choose categories, as in #1 choice: intelligence, #2 choice: administration... He told me that the 3 choices could all be in intelligence. Luckily, there are 3 intel jobs that I'd like, so I will list them all! As to overseas assignments, did your recruiter give you a copy of the magazine "Airman"? If not, ask him for one. That gives a good breakdown of many things, one being overseas assignments as opposed to stateside ones. From what I see in my magazine, the majority are stateside. However, if you're interested in going overseas, they tell you to make that known when you get to put down your choices for duty assigments. Probably because a lot of people are married, attached, or don't want to leave the US for other reasons. I think if you let them know at that point that you're strongly interested in going overseas, your chances would be good(though not definite) on going over. They also let you know what bases need and/or have intelligence on them, so you can only choose from those ones! About the job training and job in intel right out of basic, I wouldn't see why not! Why the heck would they let you pick something as your job, then tell you you're going to be trained as a bomb-loader?? From what I've read, the USAF guarantees you job training and initial placement in one of over 150(something like that!) jobs. The initial placement thing is kind of confusing. Perhaps I'll grill my recruiter and get back to you. See, I am 23yrs old, so I want to know what the heck I'm getting myself into! I've been out of college since May 1998, and have yet to find a job or get a decent job offer. I've always been interested in the military(father was in USAF, brother is in Army) and feel that it is a good way to get the training I need and want in intelligence. I hope I've been of some help to you. If you want to talk anymore, drop me a line at: carolinastewart@yahoo.com
