Hi. I am 21 years old and am considering joing the AF as a linguist. This may seem like a stupid question but, what do you do about showering etc.. in basic? How much time do you have? Are you allowed to bring a blowdryer with you? In general are you allowed to wear moderate cosmetics? Are you allowed to bring cosmetic type items with you such as facewash, moisturizer sunscreen etc..? If anyone has any input on this, I would really appreciate it. Also, would you say the AF is a positive experience on the whole? Are there any particular problems facing women? How many college credits do you need to enter as E2? Do people who are shy have a problem? If you can answer any of these questions, please e-mail me at lianadaugh@aol.com. Thanks!

I was so shy when I first joined the A.F., they created a monster by bringing me out of my shyness, I learned to hold my head up and look people in the eye. Found out that we were all the same, we all wore the same uniform and had the same goal. When I first went in there were no co-ed flights, so I don't know about now. When we arrived in basic all of our civilian clothes were put away, otherwise all cosmetics and toiletry items were kept. I would recommend during basic to keep the hair short, believe me in the mornings you are too tired to worry about looking glamourous. I would recommend a good sunscreen if you are going to be at Lackland in the summer. My suggest to you would be to sit down with the A.F. Recruiter, they are really pretty honest people, talk out your questions with him/her. For me the A.F. was a very positive experience, I would enlist again in a heartbeat.
