After doing my workout in the morning, I’ve noticed that.... I’m starving. I don’t mean a little hunger, I mean feeling like I haven’t eaten in a week. A half an hour after cool down I eat breakfast and I’m still hungry, I eat lunch (I’m still hungry), I eat dinner (I’m still hungry), and yes I’m starving now and I just ate :( This is also a problem because with my stomach feeling like a "bottomless pit" I eat fast, and that is not good.

I’m wondering if this is because I constantly exert myself, am I over doing it? Or is it because I'm just not eating properly?

People have told me it’s a combination of over doing it (I don't think so) and not eating properly. I’m a vegan, they said that’s why I’m always hungry because I’m not putting enough fat and calories in my system, that I'm not eating the right foods, and that I need to eat meat as well. Also, that I shouldn’t run and do my workout routine every day, but every other day. Is that true? I just want to know if anyone knows anything about this or is experiencing/experienced the same thing while training. I would appreciate it if anyone can give me some useful input, especially if you are a vegan and can give me advice on nutrition.

Thanks,

Keeva

Hi Keeva!

I've experienced the same thing, but I'm a meat and potatos sorta girl. I have a fast metabolism and when I'm seriously working out, it gets even faster. At one point, I was loosing so much weight (which I didn't want to do, I was strength training) and no matter how much I ate (which I did during all my waking hours), I was always hungry and still loosing weight. I know some people who wish they could loose weight as easy think this isn't a huge problem, but it's scary when you look in the mirror and you're starting to look anorexic but you're eating 14 of 16 waking hours a day.

Anyway, my point is that I started drinking protien shakes. They're sold at placed like GNC, made for weightlifters to help them bulk up, and they really helped me keep weight on and not be so hungry all the time. I don't know too much about the ingredients, so I don't know if you can drink them with your vegan diet, but you might want to check it out.

Michelle

KEEVA, Since I am leaving in about a month for boot camp, I have increased my running. At first I experinced a similar feeling of hunger as you did. I am not a vegan, although I do not eat red meat. Michelle is right about her advise to drink the protein shake. I went to the local health store and they reccomended soy protein powder. I was ready to try something...anything. It actually works for me! The product comes in a 16 oz can in powder form. I drink an 8 oz glass in the morning after I work out. I feel full when I am done and it holds me over for about three hours. If your interested, I have some recipe suggestions that taste good and can increase your calorie intake. Maybe you can drink a glass plus eat your normal breakfast/lunch. E-mail me if you'd like recipe suggestons! By the way, my hunger feeling was not painful. If your feeling of discomfort continues, maybe check your eating and exercise habits out with your doctor to be sure they're healthy!

Thank you both, I'll go to GNC and get the protein shake. Soy protein power.... everything I eat has soy in it, can't say I won't be getting enough soy! I hope this works because this has been a problem for a couple of months. I was probably exaggerating a bit saying my stomach feels like a "bottomless pit," what I'm feeling is not painful. If you have recipe suggestions please e-mail me I'd be glad to have them.

P.S. good luck in Basic Training!

Keeva

Hi Keeva,

I'm not exactly vegetarian, but I do not really like meat as much as most people; I often forget all about it...

I know that when I started exercising, I made the mistake of eating only veggies all day. Don't do that! Eat stuff like bread, pasta, etc. The carbs fill you up and will energize you lots more (careful not to overdo it).

Also, try, when you eat, to eat ridiculously slow. As slow as you can. Just slow down so that you won't eat as much...it helps to eat meals with a friend who you know will chatter through the whole meal so you can stop often to talk.

You are not getting enough amino acids. The protein shakes are supplements for the amino acids you are not getting. Soy has many amino acids, but not all of them. The need for these amino acids is the reason why to eat meat. They are hard to get from veggies, but if veggies are your forte, you can get amino acid supplements.

Your body is building muscle. To build muscle, you need the basics of a muscle. Muscle, is meat. Meat is amino acids. Sadly plants are just not quite the same. You do not have enough building blocks for your body, so it’s sending you out to find them. Same reason pregnant women crave things. The body is hunting for something, vitamin, mineral or whatever.

I'm not telling you to change your belief in eating, but get some amino acid suppliants. There should be synthetic, so you will not need to worry about that viewpoint on it. Pills would also be easier to keep around then shakes.

Amino acid supplements, OK (I'm getting a lot of good suggestions). Also, I'd like to say I'm not a vegan because I'm an earthy save the whales type, I'm sitting in a leather chair right now. I don't eat meat because I don't like it, I've tried to explain this before and I have found this is the quickest way to explain why I don't eat meat. I get this nasty feeling in my stomach like I just ate something that went bad. The dairy thing I do for health reasons, I was a dairy lover and I was eating too much which is unhealthy. So I did away with it along with the meat, becoming a vegan just kind of happened periodically.

I will probably have to start eating dairy in the Army though I don't think they can give you soy milk, tofu, and supplements :) When I think about I will have to eat meat as well. Going through training and feeling weak because I'm not getting everything my body "needs" would not be a plus. I could handle eating chicken if I had to. Honestly, I don't want to end up sticking out by talking about what I CAN'T eat.

Thank you for replying, I plan to go to GNC today.
